The Lincoln Lawyer

You may have heard of Michael Connelly.

One of my favorite writers. He's most known for his Harry Bosch novels, but he's put out a series about a defense lawyer, Mickey Haller. And you may have heard there's a movie coming out starring Matthew McConaughey. Here's the trailer

And, guess what? To tie in with the flick, Do Some Damage is running a contest.

We have five copies of The Lincoln Lawyer novel and five movie posters to giveaway.

Here's how I'm going to do it. You're going to email me an answer to the following question.

"What's the nicest thing you can say about New Jersey?"

Post it in the comments.

At the end of the day, I'll read them over and decide (the decision is SOLELY mine) the ten winners and post my email address. The winners can email me their address and I'll make sure you get either a book or a poster. (Yup, that means you'll have to check back on the website twice.) Let's say I'll make a decision around 7 pm eastern standard time.

Deal?

Good. Now, give me some positive Jersey vibes!

Hoboken, New Jersey was home to America's first brewery (1642).

you’ve got great elements there and I do like how you encourage the readers to take the time to think.

He exhaled, blew smoke and flicked his cigarette out the crack between the window and the big rig truck door into the rainsoaked stink of New Jersey outside. "Well, whenever some monster crawls up out of the muck to end it all, like the Bible says, I guess it's got to start here." Then he smirked and turned to the hitcher on the passenger seat. "Gonna have a hell of a time decidin which way to go first, north or south, New York or DC, hah."
"You got that right," the hitcher said, clutching his battered rucksack tighter to his chest.
"Hell, I guess it ain't so bad. Bein where the devil gets his start and all. I mean you gotta start somewhere, am I right?"
"You're right, man, you're right." The hitcher's eyes rolled around in his skull like a wolf caught in a trap, looking all over the cab, out the windows at the wet mess of rusted industry outside, the flat iron gray sky.
"You a fidgety fuck, aintcha?" he said. "You got some crystal or somethin?"
The hitcher wiped his nose with his sleeve. "No man, I ain't got nothin."
He grunted, then pushed the accelerator and the truck lurched forward. They drove past a hooker standing hangdog bedraggled in a short skirt on the corner, soaked through from the rain. She looked up at them at first hopeful but then nothing, and she looked away.

I need to offer only two words: Taylor Ham.

You can see the evening star in New Jersey (it ain't Manhattan where you can't). Also, you get camera equipment shipped to a New Jersey address and you don't pay New York taxes. That's two nice things.

I like to recall the days when I was a boy and my dad and I strolled the famous boardwalk. Cotton candy on sticks, like large soft lollipops, the sticky syrup leaving bright-colored stains on our lips. The heartwarming aroma floating from the home of the original Belgian waffle, gooey fruit between two checkered tiles, powdered sugar sprinkled on the top. Caramel-covered popcorn. Wicker chairs rolled along the boards, black men pushing laborers pretending to be aristocrats. The Diving Horse shoved down a long metal sliding board, the audience applauding the horse’s ability to fly. Lime-flavored snow cones. Crowding our bodies into cabinets shaped like telephone booths, there to print our voices onto pliable plastic records.

At end of day, my dad and I sat on a dark-green wooden bench, waiting for the bus to take us home, home where my mother always expected us to consume a multiple-course feast of Italian delicacies on the shallow end of swallowing sweets all afternoon.

All I can say is that any negative thoughts I had of NJ went away when you followed me on twitter and I found out you lived there. It makes Sn00ki disappear from my mind and it makes me want to visit just so I can meet you.
