I think yours are much different stories. Though, maybe not.

Dana, Looking forward to TRIGGER CITY. And as for the convenience thing, I'm reminded of a Dylan line (yeah, surprise) from "Brownsville Girl" : 'People don't always do what they believe in./ They just do what's most convenient, then repent.' I understand characters like that.

Christina, Quirk, snarky, and bold. Couldn't agree more.

Mr. Chercover, Looking forward to TRIGGER CITY. Going to the bookstore this weekend for it. Now I have to track down the Ray short stories. Years ago Andy and I drove from Phoenix to Dallas overnight listening to Dylan, non-stop. A little burned out for awhile but I do love "Jokerman".

#1 I am drawn to characters who are quirky and snarky and bold. They say what I wish I could say and do what I wish I could do. Uh, I'm not talking about killers from crime books, just characters in general.

#2 You know I have no idea how to answer that one.Christina Davishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06285953403967286766noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119990365479009764.post-73677833623266727882009-10-26T09:14:42.761-05:002009-10-26T09:14:42.761-05:00If you liked BIG CITY BAD BLOOD, you're going ...If you liked BIG CITY BAD BLOOD, you're going to love TRIGGER CITY.

I'm looking for a character I can empathize with. He can be damaged in some way, but not a freak show, and not in a gimmicky way, just to make him different. It's not what's in his (or her) past that interests me so much as how that might make him behave now. And his cat cannot talk to him. Nor can his brain tumor. (Swear to God, I once read a book where the hero had a brain tumor he named and carried on conversations with.)

I'm not sure I have a good answer for your second question. I have the character's traits in mind, and I think, "How would he respond if this happened?" but that's about as far as I take it. My main characters have well-defined codes is the best I can say, even if their "moral code" is somewhat amoral or based on convenience.

Maybe that's why I haven't sold yet.Dana Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01350344882342624735noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119990365479009764.post-88649284234131407862009-10-26T09:12:45.520-05:002009-10-26T09:12:45.520-05:00When I pick up a book I usually wonder, "Coul...When I pick up a book I usually wonder, "Could this really happen?" And I don't mean as one of those one in a million, freak occurrances, I mean as a regular event that likely wouldn't even make the news.

And then I wonder if it could happen, does this writer have anything to say about it beyond the obvious?

The Dylan is a good place to start. He seems like such a nice guy, 'folksy,' singing about working on Maggie's farm, and laying across my big brass bed, but then he points out how you'd rather see me paralyzed, why don't you just come out once and scream it.

I like characters that tell the truth like that.John McFetridgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09442198820998606682noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119990365479009764.post-86569390683853717392009-10-26T08:31:50.106-05:002009-10-26T08:31:50.106-05:00A good blog topic. I have a feeling we've gone more from actors to directors.
I am attracted to characters who play their cards close to their chest. Ones who show their inner thoughts like a onion.pattinase (abbott)https://www.blogger.com/profile/02916037185235335846noreply@blogger.com
