Three completed in the drawer, two abandoned almost at the end, plus about ten that didn't make it past the first 20 pages.

I think you're right Steve that there is a sense of accomplishment in finishing the first book even if it sucks. Once you know you can do it, it's easier to do it again. I learned a lot from writing those books and don't regret the time I spent on them.

Unfortunately it took me three books to realize I have no skill at plotting a mystery novel and have now written a fourth, a crime novel, that better not end up in the fucking drawer.Bryon Quertermoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18142740189973184854noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119990365479009764.post-7066641106490032112010-02-03T12:53:15.723-05:002010-02-03T12:53:15.723-05:00Great post! And I've never been upset about the time I spent on them. Like you said - those manuscripts taught me a lot about the business of writing....and to be honest, I wasn't ready to be published then.Joelle Charbonneauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13608552691748018256noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119990365479009764.post-60645341491604512262010-02-03T12:41:41.126-05:002010-02-03T12:41:41.126-05:00I've got 3 in the drawer, too.

Now I don't even dare look at them.

Must remember to trash them before I die.Harveyhttp://www.novel-writing-help.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119990365479009764.post-3418409218033798562010-02-03T10:30:17.797-05:002010-02-03T10:30:17.797-05:00I may have seven in the drawer; I hate to give up ...I may have seven in the drawer; I hate to give up on my nascent PI series, but this is the last chance for the book that's out now. If it goes down, they all go into the drawer and I'll see what I can come up with moving forward.

The catch is, those were the books I wanted to write; now I'm wondering what I might enjoy writing that will actually sell. Not nearly as much fun.

I also had one of "those" rejections: too good for paperback, not original enough for a hardcover series. I should have told him I was willing to be insulted with a paperback offer, but mainly I wanted to strangle the prick.Dana Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01350344882342624735noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119990365479009764.post-58441473347609212562010-02-03T09:51:10.473-05:002010-02-03T09:51:10.473-05:00Nice info, John.

So, I have half of a screenplay written.

I'll never get back to it.

I wonder if there is at least some sense of accomplishment that goes along with finishing a novel -- even one unpublishable -- that doesn't go with our abandoned work.

I think there's probably a tendency in us to want to say we're not wasting our time, to "mine" those works (or whatever cool people call it) to build up our other works.Steve Weddlehttp://steveweddle.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119990365479009764.post-11220867740989556202010-02-03T09:40:48.027-05:002010-02-03T09:40:48.027-05:00Yeah, Mike, I thought about calling it, "The ...Yeah, Mike, I thought about calling it, "The One on the Hard Drive," where they probably are now.

My first one was written on a typewriter, the second on my Commodore 64, saved to a cassette tape.

I remember starting the computer, loading the word processing software (which a buddy and I spent two typing in from a magazine - I can't remember what it was called, but it moved the curser ahead by sentence which I thought was great) and going to make coffee while I waited.

Now I can abandon my work so much more effeciently!John McFetridgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09442198820998606682noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119990365479009764.post-64589442077672525082010-02-03T00:44:21.684-05:002010-02-03T00:44:21.684-05:00Great post, John. I have 4 more behind it in various stages of readiness, so I'm optimistic. But a great job of addressing the "drawer" that lurks in each of our lives, and the important function it performs.Mike Dennishttp://mikedennisnoir.comnoreply@blogger.com
