John captures my hometown better than anyone I've ever read.

For example: that opening scene in Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, I not only know which building that is, but I actually grew up a half a block away. Knowing the neighbourhood, that scene felt completely real to me.

With my experience as both a Torontonian (born and bred) and a lawyer (both direct and indirect experience), there's nothing in his work that rings false. McFetridge is one of my favourite authors and I can't wait for the next book.Raymond M.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119990365479009764.post-5515535007077636472010-02-17T11:55:34.184-05:002010-02-17T11:55:34.184-05:00Dec,

You don't think with a lot of adjectives and adverbs, and you don't mentally describe everyone you meet or everyplace you go. That wastes thinking time, and you have other things to think about, too, so let's get on with it. You don't hurry--mistakes get made that way--neither do you navel gaze.

He writes like that. As Declan said above, darker than what Leonard has become known for, and he's showing a little George V. Higgins influence in LET IT RIDE. I'm digging it.Dana Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01350344882342624735noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7119990365479009764.post-4769175659865392732010-02-17T04:33:21.098-05:002010-02-17T04:33:21.098-05:00LET IT RIDE / SWAP is a terrific book from a write...LET IT RIDE / SWAP is a terrific book from a writer operating at the top of his game. Seriously, if McFetridge is this good three books in, what's he going to be like after 10? Elmore Leonard is a good jumping-off point, but I think McFetridge is funnier and darker, which is no mean feat. Do yourself a favour and buy LET IT RIDE; it'll be one of your best reads of the year.

Cheers, DecDeclan Burkehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14322645323239292406noreply@blogger.com
